Panoply of asters
See the full gallery on Posterous As summer passes, so do most of the prairie blooms. Goldfinches have descended upon things in earnest, devouring seeds produced by plants that flowered over the past months. But things are not all bare, the asters push out blooms late into the fall, a last bounty for bees, butterflies, and other nectar feeders. And a lovely view for the rest of us. ...

Made my 28th Kiva loan, here's why
I made my 28th loan through Kiva today. The loan is to help a single mother in Mexico obtain building materials to add a room to her house for her children. When I heard about this loan through Kiva’s Twitter feed, I popped over and made the loan right away. I had credit from the repayment of previous loans with Kiva and some money in my PayPal account from a check I deposited through the...

Morning Feeder
This is a goldfinch seen through the screen outside Ericka’s window. We have at least two pairs frequenting the feeder. Also visible are the ox-eye sunflower and the precariously-tipping cupplants. The goldfinches and other finches and sparrows are liking the native flowers for seeds in addition to what we’re providing via feeders. Posted via email from Just and Beneficent...

Cardinal Flower
A new bloom for my garden! Planted this last year in the rain garden and want sure how it would do. It seems the wet spring and hot summer agree with it! Posted via email from Just and Beneficent posts | Comment »
Popping out all over
See the full gallery on Posterous Things are kicking into high gear on the prairie flower front! Earlier blooms like the bergamot and cupplant are expanding. New blooms include the members if the Liatris family, commonly called blazing stars. Those are just getting started and promise quite a show in coming weeks. Ironweed, a favorite of monarch butterflies, I’m told, has started...
More Prairie Blooms
See the full gallery on Posterous We’re entering high season for prairie flowers. The cupplants are starting their blooms; soon their yellow flowers will pop out all over the place. I have something unexpected this year as well. It seems an American Bellflower has volunteered itself among the rest of the prairie plants. This is a Minnesota native wildflower, so it’s welcome! The...

The Prairie Begins to Bloom
See the full gallery on Posterous It is mid-July and my prairie garden has started to turn up the heat, as it were. Some early blooms have gone to seed, bit new things are taking their place. Observe: Posted via email from Just and Beneficent posts | Comment »

Why I Dig Native Plants
Here is an excellent example of why I like the style of gardening that I’ve been doing over the last several years. The plant pictured below is Path Rush, a happy little grass that doesn’t get much taller than a foot and has pretty golden flowers and seed-heads. I planted a few if these in my boulevard a couple years ago. This one I discovered as I was removing unwanted plants (aka...

Projects, Clutter, and thoughts thereon
Last week, I started a project to clear up the usefulness of our dining room. It had been slowly transformed into a space where various things sat on horizontal surfaces and collected disgusting amounts of dust. So Saturday was the day of getting all the stuff contained in boxes, moved out of the room, and getting the room cleaned. With that out of the way, I was able to assess the space and what...
Thoughts on Halo
Over the last three weeks, I’ve played the original Halo trilogy in its entirety. My main impression is that the life of the Master Chief would be much longer if architects in the Halo universe incorporated the basic safety rail into their work. Now, sure, Master Chief is seven feet tall and weighs quite a bit in his armor, and yes there are occasions when, under my guidance, he has jumped...

Late night worries
I’m busy at work, which is a good thing. But I don’t know if I can finish the projects assigned to me in the time allotted. Ericka is having a health issue. It is probably something minor that will clear up in a week or so with medication. But I wonder if it is a sign of something worse developing. My driveway remains uncleared largely because shoveling makes my back hurt. Am I so...

Begging your indulgence
I started using the Posterous service last year and have, until now, used it mainly as an outlet for photography. I’ve just learned, however, of their ability to connect with other services such as LiveJournal and Facebook. So this post is an experiment in how it will be treated by Posterous and the services it connects to. My apologies if you see this multiple times. My hope is that...
